Chiprovtsi

ChiprovtsiThe town of Chiprovtsi is picturesquely situated in the folds between Chiprovska and Western Stara Planinaon the banks of Stara Reka and Martinovska Ogosta rivers. It is 120 km to the northwest from Sofia and 35 km to the west from Montana. Centuries-old stronghold of Bulgarian spirit.
Chiprovtsi is a very old settlement, originating in Thracian time, when ore mining in these lands is dated back. There were ledges of copper, lead, gold, silver and iron. In Roman age the region around the village had beenamong the gold mining centres of greatest importance on the Balkans. The village is named after the Roman name of copper - cupprum. It was named Kiprovets first, then Chiporovtsi and finally the today's Chiprovtsi (renamed in 1956).
The years of the Bulgarian National Revival witness the establishment of the goldsmith's school of Chiprovtsi and the foundations of the carpet industry.
The Chiprovtsi carpets (rugs) are manufactured in traditional Bulgarian technology of the Chiprovtsi weaver school dating from centuries ago. They are hand made and only natural materials are used  wool and cotton. The main material is properly processed wool, some of the motives are of natural cotton and the colors are taken from the nature too  all of the materials are ecologically clean and produced in an ancient technology.
The Chiprovtsi carpets have no analogue in the world and Bulgarian material culture that has survived through the centuries and will be kept on. Because the Chiprovtsi carpet can guarantee for use throughout the years - at least two - three generations ahead.
